The medical concern is clear.  About a quarter of one percent of the population develops and adverse reaction to even the safest vaccines.  Since each of the 200+ cold viruses would require it's own vaccine, a large percentage of the population would be placed at a greater risk medical risk from taking a 200-serotype cold vaccine than from catching a cold.  "The cure [a multiple cold vaccine], were it possible develop, might be many times more dangerous than the disease itself.", researchers concluded.

The cost factor is an even greater deterrent.  If an effective battery of vaccines were ready for human testing tomorrow morning (none are ready at the moment), the price of getting FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approval for them within the United States alone be as high as $15,000,000 to $100,000,000 dollars per vaccine, or from $3,000,000,000 to $20,000,000,000 all together.

Until, now the lifetime immunity factor has removed much of the pressure to find an effective cold cure.  When your body recovers from a particular rhinovirus infection, it retains an immunity to that particular rhinovirus for life.  The antibodies it uses in fighting off the infection require about 72 hours to make - the first time.  But, once synthesized, a particular antibody remains on file, in a sense, ready to stop any new reinfection of the same virus again, almost immediately.   As a result, a relapse of the common cold virus is rare.

There is no cure for any type of rhinoviral infection.  So, doctors have no weapons in their pharmaceutical arsenal to help suffering patients.  They are legally allowed to prescribe antibiotics, which might assist the body in fighting off a secondary opportunistic bacterial infection, should one develop.  But, the benefit to most patients is more psychological than medical, since even ordinary cold viruses are completely immune to all known antibiotic drugs.

Antihistamine addiction doesn't possess the "psychological craving" component that smokers or alcoholics describe.
